Mar-2019. Factors affecting Claus waste heat boiler design and operation. The Claus Waste Heat Boiler (WHB) is a critical piece of equipment in a Sulphur Recovery Unit (SRU); its fundamental purpose is as a heat transfer device used in energy recovery.
The air feed to the SRU is at 118 °C, 179 kPa. The product stream is fed to the waste heat boiler. The product stream is then separated into sulphur and other product streams. The remaining product enters the catalytic step made of three reactors as shown in Figure E15.11. Each reactor operates at 240 °C; therefore, a heater is placed before

A catalytic heater works by increasing the speed of a chemical reaction. In doing so, heat is produced. This enables the unit to emit heat that can be safely used in a variety of scenarios, such as in offices, at campgrounds or at work sites. Carbon monoxide is not a concern with catalytic heaters.
Waste Heat Boiler. As a necessary part of sulfur recovery unit, the waste heat boiler is a typical fire tube boiler. The multi-pipe mouth of the waste heat boiler is connected with the outlet of the heat reaction furnace, which is both the rear wall of the reactor and the end of the transition zone.
Heat absorbed by water = 0.95 Vs(t 1 − t 2)MJ s −1,. t 1 and t 2 = temperature of hot gases before and after the W.H. boiler, °C.. Total heat as steam = sensible heat in feed water + heat absorbed by water in boiler. In good practice t 2, the temperature at which the flue gases leave the boiler, may be reduced to ca.50 K above the temperature of the water in the boiler.
CO boiler. In the hydrocarbon processing industry, the operation of a fluid catalytic cracking unit (FCCU), depending on its arrangement, produces gases rich in carbon monoxide (CO).To reclaim the energy in these gases, the FCCU can be designed to include a CO boiler to generate steam. For refineries generating large quantities of CO, field-erected boilers such as the PFI boiler are used.
A catalytic heater is a flameless heater which relies on catalyzed chemical reactions to break down molecules and produce califaction (heat). When the catalyst, natural gas, and oxygen combine together they ignite at a low enough temperatures that a flame is not needed. This process keeps repeating itself until either oxygen or the fuel source is taken out of the equation.
The system’s waste heat boiler ensures high heat recovery to produce valuable steam and the optional selective catalytic reduction reactor captures NOx from tail gas. Waste heat boilers may be watertube or firetube type, and also may be natural circulation type or forced circulation type. Waste heat boilers can be designed for either clean exhaust or soot and deposit laden exhaust.
